Hi Shayne, Like all belay devices, the most important thing is to learn how to use the Grigri properly. The best way to do this is to ask someone with plenty of experience to show you. The auto-locking feature of the Grigri has obvious appeal for a beginner but it is no substitute for experience and good practice. We would recommend that beginners start with a very simple belay device such as the DMM bug where there is less to think about.... (more)

Hey Pollie, By alternatives to a Grigri i assume you mean auto-locking Belay devices? If that's so then the answer is yes! There are loads in fact, the lightest of them is the Mammut smart and it just so happens to be one of the cheapest too! Hope that helps, Dave

Hi Hasse! Lowering people in guide mode can be a little tricky sometimes. Most devices with a guide mode have another attachment point you can attach a carabiner to if you need more leverage. If your concerned about this then maybe you should consider the new Pivot Device by DMM. hope that helps, Dave
