This weekend the global adventure sports community lost one of its leading lights when Sean Leary was killed in a BASE jumping accident in or around Zion National Park, according to SuperTopo.com. Sean was a gifted climber, BASE jumper and wingsuit pilot and a longtime stalwart of the Yosemite Valley climbing scene. In recent years he helped inaugurate a golden age of wingsuit flying in the United States by dedicating himself to opening new exits all over the country. In doing so, he became one of the most prolific jumpers of American cliffs in history. Sean will be remembered by the adventure world as one of the greatest to ever play the game and by his friends and family as a person with infinite generosity of spirit. His legacy will be a testament to the fact that he was both of these things. May he rest in peace.
Wingsuit Base jumping in America is experiencing a revolution. Until recently, wingsuit base jumpers required massive overhanging cliffs with lots of room to fly away. In the USA those big walls are mostly in national parks where jumping is prohibited. Recent advances in wing suit design, technique, and pilot skill have opened the doors to possibility. Now, a small crag atop a big hill combined with a little imagination and a thirst for adventure is a perfect recipe for human flight. Watch as the sport of wing suit flying in the USA is reborn outside of national parks. Join pilots Charley Kurlinkus, Sean Leary, and Jeff Shapiro in their quest for new & legal wing suit base jumps across North America.
