Ski touring skins have seen little innovation over the last hundred or so years that they have been around, but this year Fischer announced the PROFOIL range, which for the coming season at least will be exclusively compatible with Fischer skis. These are lighter than normal skins and have the ability to glide easier. The best way to look at these skins is as a second base for your touring skis which performs like a cross-country ski base. The pattern of the skins even comes from Fischer’s cross-country line. Because of their plastic construction, these skins do not hold water and so tend to be lighter at the end of an ascent than traditional varieties. With the ability to glide on downhill segments, this could be the start of a must-have piece of equipment for anyone who is going for super fast ascents and tours into new terrain.
