The overwhelming favourite in the men’s competition was Adam Ondra who, since the last round of the World Cup in early August (an event he won), has recorded an unprecedented double of winning both the bouldering and lead World Championships. He looked on course for the win in Korea having come top in the qualifying round but then he could only manage ninth in the semis and therefore missed out on a spot in the finals by one place. Most of the other big names went through unscathed and eventually it was Austria’s Jakob Schubert who took the win, with EpicTV star Romain Desgranges in third and 20 year old Slovenian Domen Skofic in second. Skofic is definitely a climber worth keeping an eye on – he had a very successful junior career and has already been on a World Cup podium twice, as well as taking fourth in the lead climbing World Championships last month, aged just 20. All this means that Jakob Schubert has extended his lead in the overall standings, with Adam Ondra 115 points behind in second, and Sean McColl just 4 points further back in third. Over in the women’s event, Slovenia’s Mina Markovic finally took a win after a string of second and third placed finishes this year. Jain Kim, who’s been dominant so far this season was only able to manage sixth, allowing Anak Verhoeven and Helene Janicot to make the podium in second and third respectively. Despite this slip up, Jain Kim still holds a lead of 109 points over Mina Markovic in the overall competition, with Magdalena Rock 7 points behind in third.
