Almost two months after the penultimate event of the IFSC Boulder World Cup, the final round took place in Munich, Germany just last weekend. The women’s overall competition had already been won, with the 2015 title going to Akiyo Noguchi, repeating her victory from the 2014 season. There was still plenty to play for though, not least for Shauna Coxsey, who has been hampered by injury this year but wanted to finish on a high. She certainly did that, winning in Munich with a flawless performance ahead of Fanny Gibert in second and Megan Mascarenas in third. This meant that Shauna claimed second place overall for the second year running. Akiyo, meanwhile, took fourth in Munich, the first time she’s missed the podium this season. With the overall title already in the bag though, you can’t really blame her for taking her eye slightly off the ball. The men’s event was wide open going into the last round, with no fewer than four climbers vying for the overall win. However, none of the four managed to win in Munich, continuing the unpredictable nature of the season. It was Jongwon Chon who did best, claiming third in Munich to take the overall title, ahead of Jan Hojer and Adam Ondra in second and third respectively. Jan took fifth in Munich, with Adam down in eighth, well behind surprise winner Alexei Rubtsov and Czech veteran Martin Stranik, who took second. Speaking to Adam after the event he was clearly very disappointed with the result, but as we all know the mark of a real champion isn't winning alone, it's also how you respond to defeat.
