Just over a month since we spoke to James McHaffie about him soloing 100 extreme graded routes in the English Lake District, his fellow Countryman Pete Whittaker has gone one better and soloed 150 extremes on the gritstone of the Peak District. We’ve got footage of the day from Mike Hutton, who has some brilliant content on his website, www.mikehuttonphotography.com. It’s worth bearing in mind that many of the routes James did were multi pitch, so although he climbed more metres, the difficulty of Pete’s routes, added to the physical nature of gritstone climbing make this a staggering achievement. Some of the routes he soloed were up to E6, which is hard to translate into sport climbing grades but which would weigh in at least 7a or 7a+. Pete started climbing before sunrise at Curbar Edge, before heading to the slabbier rock of Frogatt Edge, the steep walls of Millstone Edge and then doing a tour of Burbage North and South before finishing the day at the most famous gritstone crag, Stanage Edge. The list of routes that Pete did is nothing short of incredible and takes in everything from steep jamming cracks such as Right Eliminate at Curbar through to scary slabs such as Downhill Racer at Frogatt and downright hard climbs like Nosferatu, an E6 at Burbage South. I guess you could call it a “gritting” day, or say that Pete was “gritted” all day or, you get the idea. Whatever you call it, British is in very good health, with some top climbers seemingly at the peak of their powers and pushing each other forward, giving us some epic viewing.
