August 17th, 2014. Squamish, BC. World-famous climber Alex Honnold celebrates his 29th birthday by doing the thing he loves most: climbing. Most climbers would settle for a numerically appropriate 29 routes to celebrate their 29th birthday, but not Alex. The free solo extraordinaire (and part time masochist) instead elects to tick a massive 290 pitches over the course of one day. With just 16 hours of daylight available, Alex must average a climb every 3 minutes, racking up more climbing in a single day than most people manage in the space of a year.
Alex Honnold Solos A Year's Worth Of Climbing In 16 Hours | Birthday Challenge, Ep. 3
Birthday Challenge - n. “...a goal, generally in the form of physical achievement, to make your birthday more memorable than the last. Usually the number of your years lends itself to the base of your challenge.”
Everyone has a birthday. Some choose to spend theirs forgettably drinking and eating. Some choose to use the occasion to gather the support of friends, family, and community to undertake insane challenges.
“The beauty of a birthday challenge is that you can tailor something that is just for you, depending upon your feeling or mood at any place in your life...It's entirely up to you; and because of this, you can end up challenging yourself like no event tailored for the masses could ever do.” - Steve Edwards
If you want to see a human being go through the entire emotional spectrum, follow them along on a Birthday Challenge. A birthday is the intersection of life and death, and nothing is more captivating than confronting and besting one’s own mortality.
