Performance isn’t everything, kids, even for a young up-and-comer like Tia Blanco! In this episode Tia ventures over to Shaper Studios in San Diego County to fashion her own California cruiser under the watchful eyes of head shapers Derek and Chris. Shaping your own board isn't easy, but as you can see here, it's definitely worth it. From picking out your pattern, sawing the foam, planing, sanding, sanding, and oh yes, more sanding, it is one of the coolest things you can do as a surfer. After Tia picks her colors and glasses the board, her first sessions are a dream. See that smile? You won't find that anywhere but on the face of a person riding their own stick.
Justin Jung spent four days shooting Tia - a day and a half in the shaping bay and three separate sessions. The water shots, which are always tricky, were helped by choosing the right spots which had lineups conducive to framing great rides on camera. Justin worked with a Sony NEX FS700, an SPL water housing, and two lenses, a Canon 24-70 and Canon 17-40.
