The IFSC Lead World Cup arrived in Briancon last weekend, making this the 25th time that the event has visited the French city. This was the third stop on this year’s tour and already the favourites are beginning to emerge in both the mens and womens competitions.
Over a 100 hundred competitors entered the qualification rounds and despite the number of entrants, there were few surprises with the results with all the big names going through to the semi finals.
Due to forecast bad weather on the Sunday morning, the organisers decided to bring the semi finals forward to Saturday evening and as a result the later competitors climbed by the light of a spotlight, making for an amazing spectacle in front of a large crowd. The audience were particularly keen to see the French athletes in action and were delighted when 3 of their team made it into the top 8, with Romain Desgranges getting a highly impressive second place. However, despite his best efforts Romain couldn’t catch Japan’s Sachi Amma, who won even having accidentally dropped his chalkbag half way up the route. The ever competitive Jakob Schubert came third while Adam Ondra was down in 8th, continuing his poor start to the competition circuit this year.
Meanwhile over in the women’s event, things weren’t quite as exciting and Korea’s Jain Kim continued her good form by taking the win ahead of Austria’s Magdalena Rock in second and Belgium’s Anak Verhoeven in third.
Unfortunately the final itself had to be cancelled due to the continued bad weather so the results of the semi finals became the result for the competition. This leaves Jakob Schubert leading the men’s overall event, 45 points ahead of Sachi Amma and 59 ahead of Romain Desgranges. Jain Kim stretched her lead to 60 points in the women’s event with Magdalena Rock and Anak Verhoeven in second and third respectively.
