The Wall Rider from Mammut falls firmly in a half-way house between the new generation of ultra-lightweight expanded foam helmets and more traditional shell designs. This means that the Wall Rider is able to save on weight without compromising its ability to tackle more robust conditions. Weight is also kept to a minimum by the use of expanded polypropylene in the foam construction. This is not only lighter than the more traditional expanded polystyrene, but is also more elastic, returning to its original shape faster following deformation. The foam section features a number of openings for ventilation making it a decent choice for the safety-conscious sport climber or trad climbers looking for a lighter, less obtrusive helmet. Where this helmet is truly likely to excel however is in alpine terrain where its savings on weight and ability to protect from rock fall will truly come into their own. As a bonus it is also headtorch compatible for those early alpine starts.
