First up today we’re checking in with friend of the show Robbie Philips, who, with his climbing partner Logan Barber, has made a successful ascent of Alex Huber’s classic hard route, Bellavista, in the Italian Dolomites. Bellavista is a true alpine test piece and one of the hardest multi pitch routes in Europe due to the sustained climbing and insane exposure of the line.
The crux pitch weighs in at a meaty 8b+ and although Robbie said that it might feel slightly easier if it was at a crag, the often-wet holds and situation mean that it certainly earns the grade. As for the other pitches, he reckoned that the hardest section is closer to 7b+ than 8a, as previously thought, and that overall there is a lot of scary, run-out climbing. Robbie did the whole route ground up, in perfect style so a big congratulations from everyone at EpicTV for a great effort and thanks for sending us the footage.
To finish the week we’ve got a pretty full-on video featuring American soloist Mike Reardon. We’ll let the video speak for itself but suffice to say that there’s never been another climber like him. Mike was killed in 2007 when he was hit by a rogue wave shortly after soloing a route on the west coast of Ireland and his absence is still keenly felt by the global climbing community.
