After Daniel Woods pulled off the first ascent of “The Process” in Buttermilks, California, which is tentatively graded 8C+, we thought we’d take a closer look at bouldering grades. Whilst sport climbing seems to have progressed quickly through the grades over the last decade, with Adam Ondra breaking into 9b+ and Alex Megos making the first 9a onsight in 2013, bouldering grades seem to have plateaued slightly. We got the opinion of a couple of experts on the subject – climbing journalist and organizer of the La Sportiva Legends Only competition Bjorn Pohl, and the man behind the bouldering and sport climbing website 8a.nu, Jens Larssen. Their opinion isn't final of course and if you have your own thoughts on the subject of bouldering grades, let us know in the comments.
