Today on Climbing Daily we are unfortunately having to report on some extremely sad news from the Himalayas.
Last Wednesday we reported on the Double 8 expedition, which involved 3 climbers trying to summit 2 8000 metre peaks in just one week. They received a boost the very next day when they recruited 2 new team members at the last minute, Martin Maier and the Swiss machine himself, Ueli Steck, who had travelled to the area to climb with his wife.
However, disaster struck the group’s summit bid when 3 of the team, Sebastian Haag and Andrea Zambaldi and Martin Maier were caught in an avalanche less than 120 metres from the summit at around 6.55 am. Ueli and the other remaining team member, Benedikt Bohm, called for help from Base Camp and then began searching for their friends. They had been carried 600 vertical metres and despite trying for 4 hours, Ueli and Benedikt were unable to access the avalanche zone and were forced to descend the mountain.
Incredibly, Martin Maier survived the night and stumbled into camp 3 the next day but Sebastian and Andrea are missing, presumed dead.
