EpicTV star and presenter Liz Daley was killed in an avalanche yesterday whilst snowboarding in the Santa Cruz area of Patagonia. Details remain sparse but Liz was trying to climb and board down Vespignani, a 2100 metre peak above the Lago del Desierto, when she was caught in a slide. Her companions located her but were unable to save her life.
Just a few miles away, on another Patagonian peak, an early member of the EpicTV team, Andreas Fransson, and pro skiing legend JP Auclair were killed in a separate avalanche.
We followed Andreas’ career as he out grew EpicTV, Chamonix and, it seemed, the World of ski mountaineering. There was nobody else who could have even contemplated taking on challenges like those Andreas did. One famous skier described his descent of Denali’s south face in 2011 as “like flying to moon”.
JP meanwhile, had just settled down in Canada with his wife and first child after nearly 2 decades of travelling the World on skis. A true pioneer, JP has been at the very top of the ski World for a long time, initially in moguls and later in freeskiing and ski design.
The Chamonix climbing and skiing community is very tight knit and this huge loss has hit hard. We’re going to finish with a clip which pretty much sums Liz up.
