Adam started off his year in Spain, with 2 days in Siurana followed up by 2 days in Santa Linya. The highlight from that mini-trip was an onsight of ‘Gypsy Blood’, 8c+, and yet another 8c onsight – his 56th at that grade or higher. He had a few goes on Chris Sharma’s 9b, ‘Stoking the Fire’, but found it desperate and decided to leave it for now. Knowing Adam, I’m sure he’ll be back on it again before too long.
Next he headed over to Squamish, Canada, where he attempted to flash another Sharma classic – ‘Dreamcatcher’, 9a.
2 time World Cup Champion, Sachi Amma, meanwhile, has had a very successful start to 2015, having done no less than 7 routes between 9a and 9b in just 3 weeks in Spain. We reported a couple of weeks back that he’d broken into 9b by repeating Chris Sharma’s Fight or Flight at Oliana and he’s since added 3 9a+s and 3 9a’s to his tally. All in all, not a bad start to what is promising to be a big year for the Japanese climber – he’s got trips planned to California, Malaysia and Norway; so stay tuned for more from him.
In amongst all the news of 9a ascents from climbing’s big names, it’s easy to forget the lesser-known athletes who work tirelessly to establish new routes. For this reason, we’re also delighted to feature this video of DMM athlete Dave Gambus, climbing the first ascent of a new 8a in the Fgols cave, Catalunya. Many thanks to Javier Fernandez of http://www.forestlightphotography.com/ for the footage.
