Skiing

In 1946, fresh from a tour of duty in the South Seas serving in the US Navy, Warren Miller bought an 8mm movie camera and spent the winter living in a trailer in the Sun Valley parking lot skiing and filming with a friend. After 50 years and more than 750 films later, Warren Miller is clearly the godfather of ski films. On the other hand, if you spend some time in the ski section of our library you’ll see that about the only similarities between Miller’s genre-creating films and today’s filmers are a camera and skiers. Films from Teton Gravity Research, Sherpas Cinema, MSP, and Sweetgrass and Level 1 have stepped up to the point where sitting down to watch a ski vid has come a long way from Miller’s iconic chairlift fails.
