The favela Santa Marta in Rio de Janeiro used to be one of the places that give strayed tourists the creeps: rivalling drug cartels, gunfire and death dominated this poor community - until 2008. Things have changed since the police began to implement a new programme. To this new era, 16 world-class downhill mountain bikers assembled in Santa Maria for an amazing new event: an mtb freeride/downhill race through a favela. Using the natural obstacles of its steep lanes, narrow stairs and nested roofs, the participating riders were thrilled by both the challenging race track and the warmth of the favela residents.
